This week we went to a presentation given by a number of esteemed guests where the focus topic was on behavior. I had known that there were very significant numbers of students being suspended and expelled. However, I did not know to what extent. These speakers really opened my eyes to what was happening and how these students have been shuffled out of the mainstream schooling systems with little to no help where they end up in a continuation school and possibly later on in prison.
These speakers offered up practical solutions that could help me as a future teacher students who are going through a difficult time. They showed us that students who are acting out in class are often going through difficulty at home. This leads to apathy towards school and a greater tendency to start using drugs and alcohol or joining a gang.
The biggest thing that was offered to us as teachers, would be the advice to put a genuine interest in the students and care for their well being. If they have someone at school that they can count on and knows that they care, it can mean a world of a difference.
I think that this presentation has made me stop and consider the personal lives of my students a little more and to be more patient with them. The presenters talked about not taking things personal and always taking a breath before saying anything to a student. I think that this is good advice. I know that this will be useful when working with students in the future. I am very happy to have attended.
